Lance Clark Former UN Ambassador to the Balkans, Hague NY ON Climate Crisis and National Security Mon, Dec 14,2020
I have attached below a link to one version of an op-ed piece on “Pearl Harbor, Deniers and Climate Change” that has run recently in various papers in the North Country. This includes the Watertown Daily Times, Post-Star, and various editions of The Sun) and earlier in other papers (i.e., the Albany Times Union, and the Press-Republican). This is an advocacy piece that seeks to reach out in particular to those still on the fence about climate change. The article focuses on the area of “climate change and national security”. It argues that we have seen the danger of deniers before – in the years leading up to Pearl Harbor. In those years isolationists who denied the existential threats of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan came very close to keeping us out of the war until it was too late to win. I have found that coming to a discussion on climate change by speaking about this military history, and about the views of our military and intelligence institutions, offers a fresh approach for most people. If you are interested in more about the views of these institutions, I have attached a link to another op-ed piece that comes at this through discussing an analytical tool used by intelligence specialists, called “Triangulating on the Truth”. I hope that you find this interesting and that it is useful for your advocacy work. From Max Blumenthal "The Gray Zone" re: Planet of the Humans issues around renewables: "Els informed fellow mining industry insiders. “It means selling global mining as the solution to climate change because mining metals is the only path to green energy and green transport.”....Already devastated by coups and neocolonial exploitation, swathes of the Global South from Bolivia to Congo – home to massive reserves of cobalt hand-mined in “slave conditions” for electric car batteries and iPhones – are being further destabilized by the minerals rush."
Assembly Point Water Quality Coalition fall 2020 newsletter with residential letter to Governor Cuomo asking for a lakeside septic inspection program. Lake George is feeling the impact of overdevelopment, cultural eutrophication compounded by climate change with warmer waters. This is manifesting in excessive Algae for an oligotrophic lake and most recently the development of the first HAB or Harmful Algal Bloom. Our North Country waterbodies are in peril.
