POWER PLANTS/ UTILITIES Sept 1, 2021: Call Governor Hochul:Stop Bitcoin Mining in NY, starting with the Greenidge fracked gas power plant on Seneca Lake877-235-6537
What is Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a form of energy intensive cryptocurrency mining that, according to a2018 study published in Nature, could single handedly produce enough greenhouse gases to raise global temperatures above the 2-degree Celsius tipping point in less than three decades. Bitcoin mining can use the same amount of energy as entire countries like Argentina. Parts of China and India are considering banning Bitcoin, because it is hampering their climate goals, and taking power away from the public to use for private Bitcoin operations. And it's coming to New York. The Greenidge Bitcoin facility is a test case for how the rest of New York will fall. It is not an outlier- renowned environmental law firm Earthjustice and the Sierra Club warned New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) of 30 upstate power plants that could be targeted for Greenidge's new business model of reviving old or retired fossil fuel burning plants to make cryptocurrency. Another plant has just been identified in North Tonawanda near Buffalo, and others are waiting to see what happens with Greenidge. Everything New York plans to do to fight climate change could be undermined by this single, energy-intensive industry if we allow it to move forward unchecked.
NY Power Plants: DANSKAMMER!!! Stop the Danskammer Power Plant Call: 877-235-6537 The Hudson Valley is in danger. Wall Street investment firm Danskammer LLC is ramping up its efforts to build a fracked gas power plant right on the banks of the Hudson River in Newburgh, and it's up to us to stop it. If the new plan is approved, the Danskammer power plant would go from running 5% of the year as a "peak period" plant to operating over 70% of the year, increasing its emissions and worsening our air quality. Expected emissions from the plant include known carcinogens like benzene and formaldehyde, as well as greenhouse gases like methane.
Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking:
” can poison groundwater, pollute surface water, impair wild landscapes, and threaten wildlife.
In 2014 Governor Cuomo banned the practice of hydraulic fracturing in NYS. But it did not ban the intake of fracked gas from out of state and much activism and contention has followed around pipeline construction and permission for out of state import of fracked gas, especially since the inception of the 2019 CLCPA NYS climate bill which requires a tight timeline to reach net zero use of fossil fuels in NYS by 2050. New infrastructure by utilities and private companies for transport of fracked gas from other states contradicts that intention....
In 2020 the NYS legislature codified into law Governor Cuomo's ban on fracking. And now the legislature is taking up a more stringent version of that law.
